Apple: iPhone 5 pre-orders topped 2 million in one day

Share

More than 2 million iPhone 5 units were pre-ordered Friday, doubling the record Apple set last year with the iPhone 4S.

The company revealed the news Monday morning, saying demand exceeded supply and as a result many of those who pre-ordered may not see their iPhones until October.

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a statement.

The iPhone 5, Apple’s sixth-generation smartphone, was unveiled Wednesday. Pre-orders began Friday at 12:01 a.m. PDT, and those who were among the first will get their phones on Friday. That’s the day when it will be available at physical stores, though long lines are expected.

The device is available with 16-gigabytes of storage for $199; it’s $299 with 32 GB and $399 with 64 GB.

AT&T;, one of the phone’s carriers, also announced that the iPhone 5 had helped it set a sales record. The Texas-based company said the new version was its fastest selling iPhone and said it sold more units on its first day and over the weekend than ever before.

Apple’s share price opened Monday on the brink of breaking $700 at $699.33.
